Hello, and thank you for visiting Phys Assist Tutoring. My name is Robert, and I have dedicated over two decades to teaching, leading, and inspiring young people through Physics.
I studied Physics at Swansea University, where I developed a fascination for how science is applied to real-world challenges. After graduating, I completed a Master’s degree in Environmental Analysis, specialising in the measurement and recording of radiation levels at disused nuclear power stations.
Following my postgraduate studies, I joined the Nuclear Engineering Division at Rolls Royce, where I worked on projects that demanded precision, problem-solving, and a strong scientific foundation. This industrial experience showed me how Physics underpins some of the most advanced technologies in the world — insights I continue to share with students today.
In 2002, I qualified as a teacher, determined to bring both my academic and industrial experience into the classroom.
Career highlights
Physics teacher for 24 years, including 18 years as Head of Science.
Recognised nationally as Physics Teacher of the Year (Institute of Physics, 2014).
Served as Lead Educator with the National Space Academy (2014–2024), delivering masterclasses and workshops to inspire students across the UK.
Currently an examiner for WJEC GCSE Physics and Edexcel A-level Physics, giving me first-hand knowledge of assessment requirements.
Contributed to curriculum reform as a member of the Welsh Government’s Qualification Development Advisory Group, shaping the new Science GCSEs due for first teaching in 2026.
Extended my teaching beyond the classroom through GCSE Astronomy, coding and electronics enrichment, and wider STEM outreach projects.
My Approach to Tutoring
I believe every student has the potential to succeed in Physics. My tutoring approach is shaped by:
Adaptive teaching – lessons tailored to each learner’s needs and pace.
Evidence-informed strategies – using retrieval practice, spaced practice, and effective feedback to build long-term mastery.
Clear scientific communication – helping students not just to learn Physics, but to explain it confidently in exams.
Exam insight – preparing students to recognise what examiners are looking for and how to demonstrate understanding clearly.
My goal is not only to raise grades, but also to give students the skills and confidence to think like physicists.
For me, Physics has never just been a subject — it’s a way of asking questions about the universe and learning how to solve problems that matter. From my early research into nuclear science to leading outreach projects with the National Space Academy, I’ve seen first-hand how Physics connects to the real world and opens doors for young people.
Tutoring gives me the chance to share that passion on a very personal level. In the classroom, it’s easy for students to feel lost in the crowd. With one-to-one support, I can focus on their needs, their questions, and their goals. Sometimes it’s about building confidence in the basics; sometimes it’s about stretching high-achievers to think beyond the syllabus. Every learner is different, and that’s what makes tutoring so rewarding.
I also tutor because I believe Physics should be for everyone. Too many students give up on it, thinking it’s “too hard” or “not for them.” My role is to break down that barrier, to show that complex ideas can be explained simply, and to help students experience those “lightbulb moments” where it suddenly makes sense.
Most importantly, I tutor because I want students to leave not only with better grades, but with greater self-belief. Physics teaches resilience, problem-solving, and critical thinking — skills that last far beyond the exam hall. Watching students grow in confidence and realise what they’re capable of is the best reward I could ask for.
